Daejeon Sees First Population Growth in More Than a Decade0Daejeon’s population is rising again for the first time in over 10 years, marking a turning point for a city long troubled by steady outmigration.

Government data shows the city’s population reached 1.44 million at the end of August, an increase of 2,439 since December. The growth has been consistent for four straight months, with more people moving in than out. Between January and August, 58,226 people settled in Daejeon, while 54,411 left, resulting in a net gain of 3,815 residents.

Young adults are leading the trend. More than 24,000 people in their 20s have moved to Daejeon this year, accounting for over 40% of all new arrivals. Employment opportunities were the top reason for relocating, followed by family ties, housing, and education.

City officials point to job creation, housing support, and youth-focused programs as key factors. The administration has promoted industrial park development, business investment incentives, affordable housing for young people, and cultural projects such as the Daejeon Zero O’Clock Festival.

Mayor Lee Jang-woo said the growth represents more than numbers, calling it proof that young people see Daejeon as a place to live, work, and build their future.
