Pet-Friendly Restaurant Law Proposed in Korea0South Korea may soon allow dogs and cats in restaurants as the government moves to make pet-friendly dining official. On April 25, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced a proposed change to the Food Sanitation Act. The amendment would create hygiene and safety rules for eateries that welcome pets.

The plan follows a two-year trial program, which showed cleaner conditions and high satisfaction among restaurant owners and customers at pet-friendly establishments. Under the proposal, restaurants may allow entry to dogs and cats, Korea’s most common pets. These animals also have the highest vaccination rates.

Restaurants must meet hygiene standards, including placing signs at entrances to show pets are welcome. Food must remain in covered containers, with pets barred from kitchens or storage areas by physical barriers. Hand sanitizer must be available, and restaurants must provide leash hooks and post reminders to keep pets from roaming.

Businesses that break key hygiene rules, such as letting animals into food prep areas, could be shut down. Officials say the change would enhance convenience for pet owners and support the growing pet-friendly industry.
