This nutrient, called flavan-3-ol, is found in cocoa, tea, apples, and berries, and it helps keep your heart strong. Bananas, however, have a special enzyme that breaks down this nutrient in the blender and in your stomach. As a result, the body absorbs about 80% less of it. Scientists say berries, grapes, and pineapple are better for smoothies because they won’t cause beneficial nutrients to be lost.
