Research Team Documents Rare Rafflesia Opening After Years-Long Quest0For 13 years, Indonesian conservationist Septian Andriki searched the rainforests of West Sumatra for a flower almost no one has witnessed in bloom. On Nov. 20, his long pursuit finally ended in a small jungle clearing, where a camera recorded him weeping with relief. Andriki had guided a research team, including Dr. Chris Thorogood of the University of Oxford Botanic Garden, in a mission to find Rafflesia hasseltii, one of the world’s rarest and most elusive plants.

Rafflesia species are among the strangest organisms on Earth. For most of their lives, they remain hidden as microscopic threads of cells inside a host vine. Only after several years does a hard, chestnut-like bud push through the vine’s surface, swelling for months before unfurling into a massive, red, rubbery flower that emits a powerful smell of decaying flesh. The odor attracts insects that carry pollen between blooms. The entire spectacle lasts only a few days before the flower withers away.

Even within this unusual genus, Rafflesia hasseltii stands apart. Known locally as Cendawan Muca Rimau, or “tiger-faced mushroom,” it grows only in a remote protected stretch of West Sumatran rainforest that requires special permission to enter. Researchers say the flower is so rare that wild tigers have likely seen it more often than humans. Andriki, Thorogood, and local guide Iwan Iswandi trekked through the jungle to document and help conserve the species.

Their timing proved remarkable, with the flower opening just as they arrived after nine months of development. Thorogood placed a hand on Andriki’s shoulder as he cried, saying, “We found it, my friend.”

With many Rafflesia species threatened by habitat loss, the brief bloom was both a scientific triumph and a reminder of what could vanish if the forests continue to shrink.
