The findings, published in Nature Communications, challenge the traditional view that evolution only moves forward. Scientists believe the western islands, which are geologically younger and have nutrient-poor soil, may have pushed the plants to adapt by reverting to older traits better suited for survival. In this case, the tomatoes may have reverted to producing older chemical defenses to thrive in an environment similar to what their distant ancestors once faced.

The team traced this adaptation to changes in four amino acids in a single enzyme. Using evolutionary modeling, the researchers also confirmed the direction of the adaptation: the tomatoes had indeed returned to an earlier ancestral state.

Researchers say the discovery proves organisms can revisit older traits using existing genetic pathways, offering new insight into how life responds to environmental pressures. The study also underscores the Galápagos Islands’ continued role as a living laboratory for evolutionary science.

Beyond its theoretical implications, the discovery may have practical benefits. Understanding how plants adapt chemically to stress could support the development of hardier crops capable of withstanding poor soil and changing climates – potentially reducing reliance on pesticides.

These resilient tomatoes offer a powerful lesson: evolution does not always follow a linear path. When environments change, life may adapt by regressing, underscoring the complexity and unpredictability of nature.
