Japan Blanketed by Snow During Harsh Winter0In early February, Japan was hit by extreme snowstorms that severely impacted daily life, particularly in the Hokkaido region and along the west coast. These areas experienced the heaviest snowfall in years, with some areas receiving record-breaking amounts of snow, resulting in widespread disruptions.

Obihiro in Hokkaido saw 129 cm of snowfall in just 12 hours, a record for the area. This unprecedented snowfall overwhelmed local infrastructure, causing road closures and stranding vehicles. Similar conditions along Japan’s west coast led to hazardous situations for travelers and residents. In some parts of the region, snow drifts and freezing winds reduced visibility to near zero.

The storm also caused severe disruptions to air travel. At New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, 91 flights were canceled due to strong winds, snow accumulation, and reduced visibility. This left many travelers stranded and delayed plans for days. Trains and roads were also closed in various regions, further complicating efforts to reach safe destinations.

In response to the storm, local authorities urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Motorists were advised to use snow tires and ensure their vehicles were equipped with emergency supplies, such as shovels and blankets. Schools and offices in the hardest-hit areas closed to prioritize public safety.

The storm served as a reminder of how unpredictable weather can drastically impact daily life. One must stay informed, follow official guidance, and be prepared with essential supplies to stay safe in extreme weather.
