Lymphatic Drainage Massage0The lymphatic system is a network of tissues, glands, and organs that circulates lymph throughout the body, a fluid that provides nutrients to cells and tissues, carries white blood cells from organs, and transports toxins to the lymph nodes for filtration. When something disrupts this intricate process, lymph can build up in the arms, legs, ankles, or other parts of the body, making them swell.

That’s where the lymphatic drainage massage comes in. It is a gentle massage to move the lymph from the tissues to the lymph nodes, which eases the swelling. Unlike the typical massage, lymphatic drainage techniques require an incredibly gentle touch. Many lymph vessels are right under the skin, so too much pressure would have the opposite effect. A massage therapist would lightly apply pressure to the armpits, neck, knees, and, with consent, the groin area to coax excess lymph from the swollen tissues toward the lymph nodes.

Lymphatic drainage massage can treat various conditions. It can treat lymphedema, a build-up of lymph fluid in the fatty tissues, and fibromyalgia, a medical syndrome that causes chronic widespread pain. It can also help treat post-surgical swelling, migraines, sports injuries, and deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in a vein). Moreover, it can make your skin look healthier by improving blood flow, which leads to better collagen production. It can even improve your mental health, relieving stress and making you feel more relaxed.
