Disney and OpenAI have struck a landmark three-year agreement that opens Disney’s storytelling universe to one of the world’s most powerful AI platforms. Under the deal, OpenAI’s short-form video generator Sora will be licensed to create short, user-prompted social videos using more than 200 characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. Users of OpenAI’s ChatGPT will also be able to ask the chatbot to create images that draw from the same intellectual property.

The partnership goes beyond licensing. Disney will become a major OpenAI customer, using its application programming interfaces to develop new tools and experiences, including features for Disney+, while deploying ChatGPT internally for employees. Disney will also make a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI.

Both companies emphasized a shared commitment to responsible AI usage, promising safeguards for user safety and protections for creators’ rights. The agreement excludes the use of real actors’ voices or likenesses.

Executives from both sides described the collaboration as a new chapter for the entertainment industry. By combining Disney’s iconic characters with generative AI, the companies aim to provide fans with more personal, creative ways to connect with the stories they love.
