For the first time in more than half a century, a cargo ship sailed directly from Jeju Island to Qingdao, China, marking a historic moment for the island’s economy. On Oct. 18, the SMC Rizhao docked at Jeju Port, carrying machinery equipment from China and loading local products, including processed seafood and bottled water, for the return trip.

Until now, goods from Jeju had to travel through Busan Port, adding both cost and time. The new sea route changes that completely, cutting shipping costs by more than half and reducing travel time by two full days. Local companies say it’s like opening a “fast lane” between Jeju and one of China’s busiest trade cities.

The route will operate weekly, with ships departing from Qingdao on Mondays and returning on Saturdays. Officials say it could help Jeju become a major logistics hub in Northeast Asia and attract more global business.

Governor Oh Young-hun called the route “a bridge of cooperation and opportunity.” For Jeju residents, it’s more than just the opening of a shipping lane; it’s a sign that the island is stepping onto the world stage once again.
