Students Race Solar Cars Across the Australian Outback in Global Challenge0A fleet of futuristic, sun-powered vehicles set off on Aug. 24 from Darwin in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, a grueling 3,000-kilometer race across the Australian Outback that has become a global showcase for sustainable transport innovation.

The biennial event drew 34 teams from 17 countries. Following the Stuart Highway south to Adelaide, the challenge tests the durability of solar cars and the ingenuity of their student engineers in some of the world’s harshest conditions. Teams compete in three categories: the elite Challenger class, the passenger-carrying Cruiser class, and the experimental Explorer class. Only about a quarter of entrants typically reach the finish line.

This year, Dutch powerhouse Brunel Solar Team clinched victory, marking the team’s eighth win in the event. Solar Team Twente, also from the Netherlands, finished second, while the defending champion, Innoptus of Belgium, claimed third.

“Three thousand kilometers and only minutes apart from our competitors ? very, very strong competitors this year. Just insane,” said Brunel driver Martijn Boonen.

Event ambassador Chris Selwood said the contest continues to push technology “with dreams of a more sustainable future.”
