Guardians of Innovation: Korea’s Intellectual Property Leaders Revealed0In South Korea’s fast-moving tech and consumer markets, innovation doesn’t stop at invention ? it extends to how ideas are protected. New data shows Samsung Electronics leads the nation in patent registrations, while beauty giant Amorepacific holds the most trademarks.

According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), Samsung has filed over 134,800 patents, accounting for 5% of all domestic registrations. Its dominance reflects decades of research in semiconductors and mobile technology. Just last year, it added more than 5,255 new patents.

On the branding front, Amorepacific owns 16,514 registered trademarks, placing it first in that category. Known for global cosmetic brands like Sulwhasoo and Hera, the company has strategically built a vast portfolio since its founding in 1945.

Korea’s first patent dates back to 1909 ? a straw hat design used to fund the independence movement. Since then, over 2.7 million patents and 2.74 million trademarks have been filed. KIPO expects both to surpass 3 million by the end of the decade.

Commissioner Kim Wan-ki said the rankings highlight how intellectual property reflects Korea’s industrial evolution. “These aren’t just numbers,” he said. “They represent our national commitment to innovation and growth.”
