Reports of a rise in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China have sparked concern, but health experts say the situation is far less alarming than the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
HMPV, first identified in 2001, causes mild respiratory infections similar to the flu, with symptoms like cough, fever, and nasal congestion. Young children and the elderly are most vulnerable. The virus spreads through contact with infected people or surfaces and is more active in colder months.
Chinese health officials report increasing cases among children under 14, particularly in northern regions, where low temperatures persist. Infections may rise further during the Lunar New Year holiday due to increased travel and gatherings.
The World Health Organization is monitoring the situation but notes no unusual outbreak patterns. Experts emphasize that HMPV is not new and that most people develop immunity early in life. Authorities urge calm and recommend precautions such as frequent handwashing, mask-wearing, and avoiding crowded places.
