Cassandra Lin founded Project TGIF (Turn Grease Into Fuel) in Rhode Island when she was just 11, proving that kids can help solve big problems. After discovering that many local families couldn’t afford heat during the cold winters, Lin encouraged restaurants and neighbors to save their used cooking grease. TGIF takes this oil and has it turned into biodiesel, allowing families to heat their homes. Today, the program collects more than 15.1 thousand liters each month and donates bioheat to hundreds of families in need. Lin’s idea not only reduces pollution but also helped inspire a state law requiring businesses to recycle used cooking oil.
