New AI Method Speeds up Art Restoration

New AI Method Speeds up Art Restoration0Restoring an old painting can take years, but Alex Kashkin, a graduate student in mechanical engineering at MIT, used artificial intelligence to do it in just hours. First, he scanned a 15th-century painting and analyzed it using existing AI algorithms to create a virtual version of its original look. The AI mapped over 5,600 damaged spots and matched colors precisely.

Kashkin then printed two thin film layers and placed them on the canvas, finishing the restoration in 3.5 hours – about 66 times faster than usual. The removable film keeps a digital record, helping scientists study and preserve art safely.
