How Sunscreens Protect Your Skin

How Sunscreens Protect Your Skin0Sunscreens protect skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet or UV rays in two main ways. Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to block sunlight, while organic sunscreens use special molecules to absorb UV rays.

While no sunscreen blocks UV rays 100%, most protect skin very well. SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, shows how much UV protection it offers. SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UV rays, SPF 30 about 97%, and SPF 50 about 98%. Even lower SPFs can provide strong protection when used properly.
