Edward Jenner

Edward Jenner 0Edward Jenner was a British doctor who helped change medicine. At 14, he began training to become a doctor. Later, he worked in his hometown of Berkeley. In 1796, he tested his idea of using cowpox to protect people from smallpox, a deadly disease. He tried it on an 8-year-old boy, and it worked. Jenner called it a “vaccine,” from the Latin word “vacca,” meaning cow. At first, people laughed at him, but many later saw that vaccines could save lives. Today, Jenner is known as the father of vaccination.
