Why Are Oceans Salty, but Rivers and Lakes Aren’t?0Oceans are salty because they contain a lot of dissolved salt. This salt comes from rocks on land. When rain falls, the rocks break down, and tiny bits of salt and other minerals get carried into rivers. The rivers flow into oceans, bringing these minerals with them. As the water evaporates from oceans, it leaves the salt behind, making the oceans salty.

Rivers and lakes are not salty because they do not hold the salt for long. The water in rivers keeps moving, while water flows into and out of lakes, sweeping away the minerals.

That is why oceans are salty, but rivers and lakes are not!
