Winter Solstice Brings Shortest Day

Winter Solstice Brings Shortest Day0The winter solstice happens every year in December. It is the shortest day of the year because the Sun is the farthest from the Earth’s equator.

This year, the winter solstice will be on Dec. 21. On this day, people will see less daylight and longer nighttime. After the solstice, days will slowly get longer as we move toward spring.

Many cultures celebrate the solstice. Some light candles or make special meals to welcome back the longer days. The winter solstice marks the start of winter.
