The Science Behind the Autumn Season

The Science Behind the Autumn Season0Autumn begins with a special event called the autumnal equinox. In the Northern Hemisphere, the event falls on Sept. 22 or 23 each year. On this day, the Sun shines directly over the Earth’s equator, making day and night equal in length.

As the Earth continues orbiting the Sun, its tilted axis means the Northern Hemisphere will receive less and less direct sunlight. So, the days grow shorter, and the temperatures drop, bringing this part of the planet autumn weather. Many trees start losing their leaves because the shorter days and cooler temperatures signal them to stop making food.
