 Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft returned to Earth without astronauts after undocking from the International Space Station (ISS).
It originally should have brought NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams home, but technical issues made the capsule too risky. Instead, the two astronauts will stay on the ISS until February 2025, returning in a SpaceX Crew Dragon.
The Starliner’s six-hour flight ended with a safe landing in New Mexico on Sept. 7. According to NASA, Butch and Suni are doing well and in contact with their families. Boeing and NASA are working to fix the Starliner’s problems.
It was the spacecraft’s first test flight with astronauts, and engineers are now reviewing what went wrong before deciding the next steps.
