Soon, a Nova Explosion Will Be Visible Without a Telescope

Soon, a Nova Explosion Will Be Visible Without a Telescope0In September, a nova 3,000 light-years away will light up the night sky. Astronomers are excited about the explosion of T Coronae Borealis, or T CrB.

T CrB consists of two stars: a white dwarf and a red giant. As the white dwarf pulls in material from the red giant, it heats up and explodes, creating a nova. This phenomenon doesn’t destroy the stars, so it repeats. It happens about every 80 years.

The nova will look like a bright new star, visible to the naked eye for several days. The last T CrB nova occurred in 1946.
