Hermit Crabs Are Increasingly Using Trash as Homes, Research Finds0Hermit crabs usually live in empty seashells or snail shells. But a new study shows they are increasingly wearing trash instead. Scientists from Poland found 386 photos of hermit crabs using plastic, metal, or glass items as shelter on social media. This behavior was seen in 10 of the 16 species of hermit crabs from Africa to Central America.

Researchers think hermit crabs might prefer trash because it is easy to find and carry. Some hermit crabs might even choose it for camouflage.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said study co-author Marta Szulkin. “But at the same time, … we’re living in a different era, and animals are making use of what’s available to them.”
