William Hamilton Shaw0William Hamilton Shaw was a U.S. Navy officer who loved Korea. He was born to missionaries in Pyongyang. After finishing high school in Korea, he returned to the U.S. and served in World War II. Later, he taught warship operations at the Korean Naval Academy. While studying for a doctorate at Harvard University, Shaw heard about the Korean War. With his fluency in Korean, he joined General Douglas MacArthur’s staff. Shaw volunteered with the U.S. Marines and was killed on patrol in Nokbeon-dong, Eunpyeong District, Seoul, on Sept. 22, 1950.
