Dutch designer Zsofia Kollar is making fabric from human hair. She collects hair from salons and turns it into fabric for clothes, curtains, and more.
Human hair is similar to wool but doesn’t need land, water, or chemicals to grow. So, this new fabric can help reduce the waste and pollution generated by synthetic fibers and cotton.
Kollar’s process uses eco-friendly chemicals to clean and soften the hair. The resulting fabric feels and looks just like wool.
Kollar’s company, Human Material Loop, started in 2021. Kollar hopes to transform 550,000 tons of salon hair into fabric annually by 2034. Eco-friendly clothes from this fabric will debut later this year.
