Bananas Are Actually Berries, Strawberries Are Not!

Bananas Are Actually Berries, Strawberries Are Not!0Despite what we call them, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are not berries. But bananas, grapes, eggplants, and oranges are!

A true berry has three parts: the outer skin, the fleshy middle, and the part that holds seeds. The fruit must also grow from a flower that has one ovary. Bananas are berries because they have these three parts and develop from flowers with just one ovary, while strawberries and raspberries do not.

So, why are some fruits called berries even though they are not? The reason is that people named fruits long ago before scientists defined what falls under the label “berries.”
