Black Bears Wake Early, Roam Farther South Amid Milder Weather0Across North America, black bears are waking earlier than usual and venturing farther south and closer to human communities. From Michigan and Colorado to British Columbia, California, and even Texas, wildlife officials are warning residents to prepare for a longer, more active bear season.

Mild winter conditions caused many black bears to emerge from hibernation by early April – some as early as late February. In Colorado, bears have already been spotted tearing into cars and climbing onto decks. Meanwhile, Michigan’s 2,000 black bears in the Lower Peninsula continue moving south and west in search of food.

These early risers are hungry and often head straight for easy meals in residential areas. Experts warn that bird feeders, garbage, outdoor grills, and pet food are common attractants. Once bears associate humans with food, they lose their natural fear, making encounters more frequent and dangerous.

British Columbia and California officials urge residents to secure food sources and respect bear habitats. In California, where the black bear population exceeds 60,000, a newly updated Black Bear Conservation and Management Plan outlines a long-term strategy to protect people and bears through science-based monitoring, habitat protection, and public education.

As human development encroaches on bear territory, interactions are becoming more common. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminds the public, “A fed bear is a dead bear.” Bears that grow accustomed to human food are often put down for safety reasons.

By staying alert, removing attractants, and respecting wildlife, humans may build a safer, more peaceful future for themselves and the bears with whom they share the land.
