There are countless stories of twin telepathy, where twins appear to share a telepathic connection. For example, twins will talk about sensing when something goes wrong with the other. There are also viral videos on TikTok that show twins mirroring actions when they can’t see each other.
Even with the abundance of anecdotal evidence of twin telepathy, scientific research has yet to validate its existence. Some scientists believe this phenomenon to be a type of macro-entanglement, also known as quantum entanglement. This theory posits that when there’s a connection between separated particles, changing one will change the other even if they are far apart.
Scientists have attempted to replicate instances of twin telepathy under controlled conditions, but the results have been mixed and not statistically significant. One of the reasons why it’s so challenging to study is because of how hard it is to define and measure it. Telepathy implies communication beyond the known senses, which we do not currently possess a clear framework or technologies to test.
Interestingly enough, identical twins tend to perform better on some telepathy challenges than fraternal twins. It may be because identical twins share the same genetic material, whereas fraternal twins are no more genetically similar than siblings who are not twins. Based on this idea, one possible explanation for twin telepathy may be that twins have the same preferences due to their shared genes.
